Tips for Dealing with the Stress of Divorce

Even the most amicable of divorces are unpleasant and cause you unnecessary stress. Thankfully, there are things you can do to minimize the stress of divorce so that your physical and mental health are well during the process. Here are just a few tips for helping you make it through such a trying time.

Don’t Neglect Your Physical Health

Sometimes the demands of divorce are so overbearing that you can forget to take care of yourself physically. However, neglecting to do so will only make your mood worse. Continue to eat a healthy, balanced diet during the process, or begin eating one if that’s not already something you’re doing. In addition to this, exercising regularly can help alleviate symptoms of sadness and stress. Aim for at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day.  Taking your dog for a walk can be a great way to get outdoors and get needed exercise and a breath of fresh air.

Find a Support Group

Emotional support from others is key during such a trying time. Look to friends and family members that can provide you with strength and confidence. In addition, you may find it beneficial to start attending a support group for divorcees. Even though your friends and family mean well, they may not have firsthand experience with such a traumatic life event. Sometimes it’s nice to be around people who can empathize instead of just sympathize with the stress of divorce.

Look for the Bright Side of Life

You may not feel like a very positive or optimistic person during your divorce, but making an attempt to see the good in life will make you much more likely to find it. Don’t sweat the small stuff that bugs you, and take every chance you have to flash a smile or have a good laugh.
